CANAN (Turkey) 'Animal Kingdom' 2017 installation, sequins, cloth, fibre, and rope size variable Collection of the Artist CANAN describes herself as a women’s rights activist who believes in the use of the female body to convey artistic expression. The artist has begun to employ the ideology of ancient Arabic and Persian cosmology, particularly the belief and formation of a form 'jinn' (supernatural creatures), which brings about an interesting conversation about moral and the ethical framework of contemporary society. In the realms of heaven, purgatory and hell, CANAN creates dualism of good and evil, internal and external, happiness and anguish that reflect the repressed aspects of the human psyche. 'Animal Kingdom' (2017) is in a heavenly realm consisting of creatures wrapped in color fabrics such as dragons, phoenix and serpents. These strange creatures from fairy tales and fantasy are both playful as well as menacing.
