Bundjalung/Ngāpuhi artist and choreographer Amrita Hepi works across performance, video, and installation globally. Represented by Ames Yavuz Gallery, her practice treats choreography as translation, blending archival material, pop culture, and speculative histories. By exploring how bodies carry, disrupt, and transform inherited knowledge, Hepi creates situations that question history's production. She has presented work extensively across Australia, Asia, and Europe, including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Sydney Festival.

Inheritance is a performance work by Amrita Hepi, performed alongside her video work Scripture for a Smokescreen: Episode 2—Baby Baby You’re A Natural. Expanding on Episode 2’s exploration of colonial histories, captivity, and the construct of the “natural,” Inheritance centers on transference between an adult and a young person. Moving through spoken text, movement, and choreographic instruction, Hepi and a young performer examine how stories, beliefs, and physical actions pass between bodies. The work investigates the responsibility of passing down knowledge, questioning what we inherit, who dictates what is inevitable, and whether a child must accept and repeat everything they are given.
