Chatchai Puipia is among Asian progressive artists of the late 1990s who reflected socio-political struggle and identity crisis. His paintings evoke nostalgic yearning of happiness and security with satire and irony. Brightly painted self-portraits with grimace and smirk satirize Land of Smile during tomyum koong Asian economic crisis. Puipia’s Siamese Smile (1995) featured as key visual of groundbreaking exhibition Traditions/Tensions at The Asia Society, New York signaled the new wave of Asian artists on international stage. His paintings and sculptures are in collection of Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Fukuoka Art Museum and Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
