A pioneer of video art in Taiwan, Yuan Goang-Ming has worked with video since 1984 and is among the country’s foremost new media artists. His practice spans digital prints, videos, and immersive installations where audiences engage with light, sound, and actors. Often projected within specially designed environments, his videos explore contemporary existence, memory, perception, conflict, and human consciousness. Yuan has exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale, Aichi Triennale, Bangkok Art Biennale, and Lyon Biennale.

Everyday War opens in a seemingly peaceful middle-class apartment. A television murmurs, a fan oscillates, and coffee rests on the table, suggesting the occupant has briefly stepped away. As the camera scans the room, windows explode and objects are destroyed, reducing the home to a postwar ruin. The devastation then reverses, restoring the interior as sunlight shimmers through the space. War may appear distant, yet it permeates everyday life through inequality, pandemics, cyberwarfare, climate disruption, and ethnic oppression. Continuing Yuan Goang-Ming’s exploration of instability, the work contrasts domestic comfort with sudden catastrophe. Yuan filmed a life-size set at 240 frames per second using a self-developed motion-control system. Its loop evokes normalized conflict and fragility.
