In 1989, Liu graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute (now Jingdezhen Ceramic University). From 1989 to 2004, he taught in the Sculpture Department at Yunnan Arts University in Kunming. From 2004 to 2022, he served as a faculty member at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. Since the late 1980s, Liu has been engaged in experimental practices within the context of contemporary art. In 2008, he introduced the concept of “No Meaning, No Content.” Liu is recognized as one of the most experimental and representative figures in contemporary Chinese art. His work has been exhibited across the world, such as Liu Jianhua: Metaphysical Objects (Fosun Foundation Shanghai, 2022); Monumenti (Fondazione Made in Cloister, 2018); The 57th Venice Biennale International Exhibition “Viva Arte Viva” (Arsenale, 2017). His important awards include Singapore Art Museum & Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation – APBF Foundation Signature Art Prize (2015), Martell Artists of the Year (2010), and Dream: The Grand Award of “Biennale of Contemporary Chinese Art Montpellier”(2005).
