Margret Eicher is a German media artist, internationally renowned for her digitally woven Medientapisserien® (Media Tapestries). Following her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, she evolved from the analog Copy Art movement to create large-scale Jacquard tapestries that fuse art history, mass media, and digital culture. Combining historical iconography with imagery drawn from contemporary visual culture, Eicher constructs socially critical narratives that examine power, spectacle, surveillance, and the politics of images in the digital age.
Across the six works presented at BAB 2026, produced between 2014 and 2023, Eicher traces the rapid transformation of visual culture over the past decade, reimagining historical traditions through the lens of the digital age. Assunta and La Grande Bouffe appropriate Renaissance and Baroque compositions, infusing them with icons of consumerism, gaming, and mass media to create layered reflections on contemporary society. Then We Take Berlin juxtaposes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Berlin's war-scarred landscape, transforming a site of historical trauma into a meditation on collective memory, media mythology, and cultural resilience. It's A Digital World 1, 4, and 5 visualize the myths of our networked age, charting the shift from the digital as novelty to a reality shaped by algorithms and artificial intelligence.
