Italian-born, Los Angeles–based artist Piero Golia is a sculptor of situations whose work expands the possibilities of art. His heterogeneous and unpredictable practice includes both large-scale physical works and immaterial gestures that can alter perception. Since 2017, Golia has explored social networks and the residue of past events. For a 2017 exhibition at Kunsthaus Baselland, Switzerland, he created The Painter, a kinetic sculpture in which a robot painted geometric forms in response to movement. The resulting Basel Paintings (2017) serve as visual evidence of that process. Golia’s work often reflects a negotiation between his vision and real-world constraints, such as space, logistics, or city laws. His paintings and sculptures have entered major public collections and been shown at institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Witte de With, Rotterdam; and MoMA PS1, New York.
