Pierre & Gilles

Born in France in 1950 and 1953 respectively, Pierre and Gilles have been producing works together since 1976. Their art features friends and family, anonymous and famous figures, who appear in sophisticated life-size sets built by the artists in their studio near Paris. Creating a world where painting and photography meet, Gilles meticulously applies paint to Pierre’s photographs once they are printed on canvas.

In addition to self-portraits, the duo has built a unique gallery of icons that has had a lasting influence on contemporary visual culture, spanning music, fashion, cinema, literature, and theatre. Through their blending of socio-cultural backgrounds and their play with artistic conventions, they have become pioneers of gender-fluid iconography, while elevating popular culture within art history. Their oeuvre also stands out for its intercultural dimension, marked by a genuine interest in various Asian cultures, including Thailand.

Pierre and Gilles have been widely collected over the past decades by international museums such as the Getty Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Centre Pompidou, and the Pinault Collection. Their work has been shown across continents, with a recent landmark solo exhibition at the Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico. Their participation in the Bangkok Art Biennale will coincide with the 50th anniversary of their artistic collaboration.
