The Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) is pleased to announce an Open Call for Performance Artists to participate in its 5th edition, Angels & Mara, taking place across Bangkok from 29 October 2026 – 28 February 2027.
Since its inception in 2018, BAB has welcomed over 300 artists from around the world, reaching over 5 million visitors and gaining global press recognition. The 2026 edition continues this legacy, transforming Bangkok’s temples, museums, cultural landmarks, and public spaces into living stages for contemporary art.
We invite proposals from Southeast Asian performance artists working in performance art, dance, movement, theatre, spoken word, music, sound, and cross-disciplinary live practices. Projects should respond to the festival theme, Angels & Mara, and be designed to engage with Bangkok’s vibrant urban and spiritual landscape.
Selected artists will receive curatorial and technical support, performance documentation, and international exposure through BAB’s platforms.

Founded in 2017, the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) reimagines Bangkok as a global cultural stage and creative hub for contemporary art in Asia. As Thailand’s first major international art festival, BAB has become one of the most prestigious and widely attended art events in the region.
The latest 2024 edition, Nurture Gaia, welcomed 1.2 million visitors and showcased 303 works by 76 artists and collectives across 11 venues.
The upcoming 2026 edition continues this trajectory, focusing on performance art that brings energy, movement, and dialogue to the city’s spaces.
As our world trembles amid chaos — from wars and terrorism to corruption and environmental decline — humanity finds itself caught between light and shadow, compassion and greed, faith and doubt. In this fractured reality, the boundaries between good and evil blur, revealing a world where opposing forces coexist and even define one another.
Angels & Mara, the theme of the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026, explores this coexistence of dialectical opposites: goodness and desire, virtue and temptation, creation and destruction.
Across religions and philosophies, Angels embody divine messengers and protectors — from the cherubim and archangels of Christianity to the devas, dharmapalas, and apsaras of Hinduism and Buddhism. Their presence signifies guidance, wisdom, and transcendence. Mara, by contrast, represents the darker aspects of the human condition: ego, illusion, lust, and despair — the inner demons that obstruct enlightenment and compassion.
Set in Bangkok, the “City of Angels,” this edition of BAB invites artists to reflect on the tension between celestial ideals and earthly struggles — where light and darkness, hope and fear, virtue and corruption intertwine in the search for meaning and redemption.
Performances will take place at official BAB 2026 venues. All venue selections will be determined by the BAB curatorial team, based on the nature of each proposed work and its suitability to the selected site.
Please note that conventional theatre infrastructure (e.g., stage sets, lighting rigs, backstage facilities) may not be available — artists are encouraged to adapt creatively to each unique space.

Angels & Mara (นางฟ้าผจญมาร) เป็นแนวคิดหลักของงานบางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ 2026 นี้ จะสำรวจการอยู่ร่วมกันของคู่ตรงข้ามเชิงวิภาษวิธี ได้แก่ ความดีงามกับความปรารถนา และ ความเมตตากับการทุจริต ผ่านมุมมองทั้งระดับโลกและระดับท้องถิ่น
